The Springfield-Clark Career Technology Center

Precision Machining/CNC

Manufacturing remains at the heart of Ohio's economy, with a wealth of new jobs projected in the fi eld in the coming years. Machining, welding and fabrication applications are the building blocks of many manufacturing processes. The SCCTC Manufacturing Technologies curriculum focuses on preparing students for this highly technical career path with practical, hands-on learning experiences.

Precision tool-makers and machinists craft the tools, molds, dies and special machines that are the heart of manufacturing production. Computers, airplanes, automobiles, televisions, video games, bicycles, and skate boards are all made with parts that precision machinists design and make.

Students develop skills through many hands-on applications that are taught in the Precision Machining lab. Students visit local machine shops through job-shadowing opportunities in their junior year. During their senior year, students who demonstrate advanced skills have opportunities to get a job through the early placement program or through the registered apprenticeship program.

Students may earn college credits toward a degree at Clark State Community College, Sinclair Community College, or the University of Northwestern Ohio by completing the Precision Machining/CNC Program. This program can be a stepping stone, by providing students with skills they can use to earn money while they pursue advanced training. This program has a placement rate of near 100%. It is estimated that there will be more than 15,000 job openings in machine trades in Ohio by the year 2008. This is the 4th largest manufacturing area in the U.S.
