With an aging population and a vibrant hospitality and tourism market, there is now even greater career opportunity in these service sectors. What's more, employers recognize skilled, educated individuals as stand-outs among the throngs that flock to these highly visible positions ranging from chefs, to hotel personnel management, to tour guides. The SCCTC Hospitality and Tourism curriculum prepares our students for the workplace, helping them to develop and sharpen the skills they need to secure the job and succeed in their careers.
Opportunities are endless for anyone interested in establishing a career in the culinary arts or restaurant business. This industry offers careers with choices to work in almost any location in the country. For hard-working, creative, and service-oriented people, the industry offers unlimited potential.
Students develop skills and work habits by working in a student-operated restaurant called the Jaguar Room. It is open to the public and staff on Tuesday through Friday during lunch hours. Junior and Senior classes share management responsibilities of the Jaguar Room during the week. Culinary students also have many opportunities to participate in state and national culinary competitions and compete for scholarships to prominent culinary colleges in the United States. Culinary students gain leadership experience through membership in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).
Students may continue their education at a four-year university, community college, or technical institute. The Culinary Arts Program can be a stepping stone to many opportunities. This program provides students with skills they can use to earn money while they pursue advanced training. The Prostart curriculum sponsored by The National Restaurant Education Association provides students with the opportunity to earn college credits while in high school. It also gives students the opportunity to earn national certification in safety and sanitation through ServSafe Certification and Restaurant Management through ProStart Management Certification. College scholarships are available through FCCLA, ProStart and other competitions held in Ohio for high school culinary students.
