The Springfield-Clark Career Technology Center

Carpentry

Residential homes. Retail centers. Commercial parks. We see new construction building up all around us, indicating that as a diversified whole, the construction industry is still rock solid. The SCCTC Construction Technologies sequence continues to evolve with new business practices and technology, helping our graduates to be well trained and prepared for challenging careers in the construction field. The diversified coursework gives students a strong foundation in construction-related specialties, including carpentry, electrical systems installation and repair, and heating and air technology.

Students in the carpentry program learn the basic skills of the construction trades. Students work at real construction sites daily with skilled instructors supervising.

Students develop skills and work habits by working at selected job sites. A desire to work is necessary for success. The curriculum includes a student-built Project House each year. Senior students start with a vacant lot in September and complete the home in the spring for a pre-selected customer each year.

The Carpentry Program provides students with skills to get a good paying job right out of high school. Many companies locally participate in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeships are also available through the Building Industry Association and other agencies. Jobs abound in the construction industry. More than 95% of 1999 graduates of this program were employed in the building industry. The average starting hourly wage in the Southwest Region of Ohio is $10.50 (information from www. OhioWorks.com).
