The automotive industry remains among the fastest growing business sectors in the United States. Because automobiles are the main means of transportation for most U.S. residents, repair and maintenance of cars and trucks is a necessity. Automotive related occupations will continue to grow, requiring highly skilled, technical training to keep pace with the industry. The SCCTC Transportation Systems curriculum focuses on developing these technical skills - and then applying them to real-workplace scenarios - helping our graduates gain the experience they need to secure high paying jobs upon graduation, or seamlessly transition into higher education classes.
As part of this two-year instructional program, students train to become entry-level automotive service technicians. Through various hands-on applications in our advanced auto technology lab, students develop the specific skills needed to advance in today's increasingly technical industry.
Giving students an intensive, in depth study of related technology, the course concentrates on four major areas of automotive repair: electrical/electronic systems, brakes, suspension & steering and engine performance/repair. Using a host of instructional methods, students are introduced to theory and operation in all areas. Safety protocol and business ethics are reinforced throughout.
Students see firsthand the skills they need to develop through job-shadowing opportunities in their junior year. During their second year in the program as seniors, students who demonstrate advanced skills have the opportunity to secure a job through the early placement program or registered apprenticeship program. There are also internships available through the Automotive YES.
The program features one of the largest, state-of-the-art L J Auto Labs in the Region. This enables students to have hands-on learning with high tech training vehicles that provide them with an understanding of how to repair components in today's computerized vehicles.
